Gabriela is from Brownsville, Texas and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Garcia successes in chemistry and science led her to a 15-year career in Edgewood where she is an educator at Gus Garcia Middle School.
One of her best experiences is when former students return to offer their appreciation for her influence.
"I want to open a path for my students in the sciences so they can accomplish something better. I enjoy living through their dreams.'
As for being nominated Teacher of the Year, Garcia says it's a good feeling. "I wasn't aware my peers thought I was performing well.'
